A walk or jog along the Nahe River features the “Salinental” valley where saline water from a brine spring trickles down seven bundles of blackthorn brushwood, spaced and towering 10 meters (30 feet). In this way, the “Salinental” provides its therapeutic lure for respiratory ailments.
Since 2010, the Salienbrau Brewery, has further developed and expanded the long-time established outdoor Beer Garden. For many years and to this day, it remains a popular spot for walkers, bikers, and a meeting place for friends and families. Now, it features a wide-screen TV for special events, a children’s playground and a panoramic view.
Overlooking the Beer Garden, the Brewery and Restaurant features light (Helles), dark (Dunkel) and wheat (Hefenweisen) varieties. SALIENBRAU went further.
Ordinary people with commitment can make an extraordinary impact on the world.

Of note, the SALIENBRAU Beer Liquor is an outstanding “digestif” to cap off a memorable meal.
The SALIENBRAU Beer Garden features an assortment of beers, soft drinks and a short menu featuring wurst, pommes and other appetizing small meals. It also offers an incredible Beer Bread to accompany German favorites on its menu. At its restaurant, we enjoyed fresh, copious meals from a menu with specialties ranging from generous salads to Schweinshaxe (Ham Hock).
A stroll in the Altstadt or Neustadt in Bad Kreuznach might include passage through the very narrow, winding cobblestone walkways called “Gässje.”
Bad Kreuznach is a vibrant town with a lot to see and do. There’s the Oceanus Mosiac, dating back to Roman times or the Kauzenburg Castle which was begun in 1206. A nice walk up to the Tee Temple, dating back to 1820, offers a commanding view of the valley and time-chiseled cliffs.
Art, architecture and history can be gleaned from its two downtown churches. One dates back to the year 1250 while another was begun in sixty years later and completed in about 1321.
(Left) Great efforts are made to preserve the centuries-old buildings in Bad Kreuznach. The typical half-timbered structure pictured above dates back to about the 16th century (Middle Ages, Early Renaissance) and exposes the multi-layers of rubble stone, masonry and fried brick (Fachwerk) used in its construction over the decades. (Right) View from the Brückenhäuse bridge which spans the serene Nahe River. The Paulus Church is on the left of the image on the bank of the River. The Nahe flows through rural communities along its way to the Rhein River.
Comparable in quality to wines from the Moselle and Rheingau regions, the most common wine grown along the Nahe is its Riesling white wine. However, based on my experiences (i.e. wine fests and friends), the Dornfelder and Portugieser (red) wines are positively memorable.
Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy. Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents.

It was quite an adventure. Walking down the stairs to a basement of a home not far from downtown BK was like entering a museum. Walls, shelves and small tables were adorned with potentially every conceivable Beatles memorabilia. This is where my son and I caught up with the local group “Old Magic” practicing for an upcoming gig scheduled that weekend for a festival along the Rhine River.
The band consists of Peter Holz (Bass), Peter Dietz (Drums), Gerd Behm (Lead Guitar and Vocals). Joke Dupont (Vocals) and Manfred Traut who contributes on Rhythm Guitar and Vocals. “Old Magic” performs timeless Beatles favorites as well as the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, CCR, Bob Dylan and Country hits such as those by the legendary Dolly Parton. I remain grateful for the opportunity of attending their practice session with music and attitudes which remain timeless on both sides of the Atlantic.
Creativity is an inherent human quality of the highest order. When we create, we become more than the sum of our parts.

There is no doubt that Bad Kreuznach is a town with charm and character. The Peffermiehl marks the point where the 14th century city walls met. Downtown, near the Nicolaskirche at the EierMarkt; surrounded by old half-timber homes (some updated as hotels), there is the statue of Michel Mort who became a legendary Kreuznach hero by saving Johann I of Sponheim in 1279 during the Battle of Sprendlingen.
For those who thrive on imagination, the Museum for Puppetry Arts features more than 2500 figurines spanning over a century. The museum introduces visitors to the art form which includes the sets, the puppet makers and the puppeteers themselves.
There are always wonders to discover along its winding streets lined with shops or exploring the small villages nearby.
Bad Kreuznach - a great place to visit and to regard it as my "Heimat." Perhaps, it can also become yours.
Next time - Departing for France, its largest Gothic cathedral while remembering those who went “Over There.”
